Hot Dogs on The Hill?

I don’t like hot dogs, mainly because I don’t know where the meat came from on the animal.  So imagine my dismay when I knew we had to go to Steve’s Hot Dogs. Oh, the sacrifice.

I studied the extensive menu online to prepare myself for that dreaded moment of ordering. Whoa! You want pasta on your dog? Check. Baked beans and potato salad? Check. Another hot dog on your hot dog? Um, sure.

As I approached the counter, I thought about a veggie dog - no mystery meat but no flavor. Then I saw Mac & Cheese. It would be sacrilege not to get some sort of meat in sausage form. I settled on salsiccia with grilled onions, pepperoncino and sriracha.  And though I don’t usually do reviews – the toppings were hotter than the sausage. I think Bob had a hot dog. Kind of hard to tell under all the toppings. For all I know, he got the hot dog covered in hot dog.

Unlike other lunch venues we have visited, Steve’s doesn’t use Styrofoam cups. Instead, beverages come cans or bottles. Yea!

Steve’s seats about thirty, counting the sidewalk tables. Urge paraphernalia covered the walls to present a not-so-subtle hint that Steve (Ewing) fronts the Urge, a band that has rocked Saint Louis for decades. Full disclosure. I have not seen the Urge. The combination of punk, heavy metal, ska, reggae, funk, rock and rhythm and blues doesn’t fit my musical taste.

Steve’s Hot Dogs now have three locations: The Hill, Tower Grove East and the Central West End.
